To avoid thread breakage and knotting when hand quilting (or hand stitching binding) never use thread over 18 inches long.
 
Have you ever tried Best Press?  If not, it's worth a try!  It's a starch alternative available in scented and unscented.  It makes your fabric crisp again and really help keep bias edges from going "wonka" on you.  It's available at This That N More.

Don't know how big to make your quilt? Standard Mattress Measurements:
Twin mattress 39X75
Double mattress 54X75
Queen  mattress 60X80
King mattress 76X80.

Remember to add 12-14" on each side (and the foot) for the drop and 14" at the head if you want it to tuck under a pillow.

Half-square Triangle:  Add 7/8” to the height and length of the finished size of the square made from sewing two half-square triangles together.  Cut square in half, diagonally to create two half-square triangles.
 
Quarter-square Triangle:  Add 1 ¼” to the finished size of the longest side of the quarter-square triangle.

1/8 yard                             4.5” x 44”
Fat eighth                         18” x 11”
¼ yard                               9” x 44”
Fat quarter                       18” x 22”
1/3 yard                            12” x 44”
3/8 yard                            13.5 x 44”
